Is going through Basic Training required to do State OCS for the National Guard?.
I'm graduating in May with a B.A. ad am planning on attending law school in the fall. I'm looking into joining the Guard and am inquiring if basic is required before doing OCS
If you're planning on direct commissioning as a lawyer later, I think all you have to do is a two week orientation. If you are looking to branch in something different, then definately YES you will need to do Basic Training. I would also recommend completing an AIT and then going into OCS. I say that because I have met a (small) handful of soldiers who have enlisted in the OCS option, only completed basic and then had problems at the actual OCS. They either have a security clearance issue, or wash out, or the occasional family problem or whatever and then they are trapped in limbo. They are not soldiers because they are not MOS qualified and they are not officers so they're just nothing and then they are discharged. It's up to you though, you're going to have plenty of career options with your education so if it's all officer or nothing then the minimum commitment would be BCT. Good luck!
